Last time I looked at openwrt in http://mjr.towers.org.uk/blog/2007/software#openwrt Simon Farnsworth commented that "DD-WRT is a competing project to OpenWRT, based on the OpenWRT code, but using such "free" software techniques as product activation, and per-seat licencing to stop you "misusing" your GPL rights"

Has that changed? Is dd-wrt well-behaved free software now, without activation codes?

Also, check out dd-wrt. The hardware support is better than openwrt and the functionality offered is really good. It recently gave a new life to a belkin route I have.
