In theory, it's less overhead for people to follow someone on twitter than to subscribe to a mailing list and it offers an easier feedback channel. In practice, I didn't find comparisons of take-up rates for email announcement subscriptions and twitter subscriptions/follows, so I didn't argue against adding twitter-announcing to blogs.

I also find that emails work best with a very different "voice" to short-message/microblog services, but my evidence on that is weak too.

What does Twitter offer beyond XMPP (Jabber)? Why not just just have people subscribe to announce@example.org ?
